[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A catalyst composition is the product formed on mixing (a) a complex [Ma(L) b X a ] x wherein M is Mn, Tc or Re; L is a ligand selected from R 3 G, R 3 QO, R 2 Q-QR 2 , R-S-R, R<SP>5</SP>(CN) m , pyridine or optionally R<SP>5</SP> substituted 2, 2'-bipyrinidine, -O-, (#- CHR<SP>4</SP>-CR<SP>4</SP>-CH 2 -), (R 2 NCSS-) or [(RCO) 2 CH-] wherein Q is P, As or Sb, R is optionally halo and alkoxy substituted aromatic or saturated aliphatic of up to 20 carbon atoms, R<SP>4</SP> is H or Me, R<SP>5</SP> is an aromatic or saturated or ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic radical of up to 30 carbon atoms and m is 1-2; X is halogen; a is an integer from I to 6, b is 1 to 3 and X is indicative of polymeric state of the complex; the number of (L) and Z groups not being greater than that required for the metal to achieve the electronic configuration of the next inert gas and (b) an Al containing adjuvant selected from (i) one or more of ReAlXf (ii) AlX 3 or (ii) a mixture of (i) or (ii) with R<SP>1</SP> g M<SP>1</SP>X h , wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H or R, M<SP>1</SP> is a metal from Group IA, IIA, IIB or IIIA, e is 1-3, f is 0-2 and e+f is 3, g is 1-3, h is 0-2 and g+n is valency of M<SP>1</SP>. The catalysts may be employed in vapour phase on a support such as Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 , TiO 2 , B 2 O 3 , zeolites, ion exchange resins and solid polymers. |
