[Also in Divisions B8, C1, C3, C4, C7, F2 and H1] A laminate is formed by contacting a porous layer impregnated with an aqueous bath containing a carboxylic acid-α-olefin interpolymer salt, theα-olefin content of the salt being at least 50 mole per cent, with a metallic layer as anode and with a negative counter-electrode and applying at least 5 volts D.C. for sufficient time to deposit a continuous insulating coating of anα-olefin/ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid interpolymer salt containing less carboxyl anions than the interpolymer salt-water impregnating mixture and thus bond the two layers together. The metal layer electrically connected to an anode may be aluminium, copper, ferrous metal or zinc alloy and the porous layer may be paper or asbestos paper and an applied potential of up to 200 volts may be used with a polished steel platen as cathode. After the deposition the resulting laminate is heated, e.g. at 125‹ C. for 30 minutes. To form a continuous strip an impregnated paper and an aluminium strip may be passed between a pair of electrodes, the aluminium strip engaging the anode. The paper strip may be wider than the aluminium strip and used to form a tube by winding it firmly in a helical pattern on to a heated mandrel. Aluminium foil coated by electrodeposition with an interpolymer derived from an aqueous solution of ethylene-sodium acrylate-acrylic acid interpolymer salt may be laminated to aluminium, paper, asbestos paper or polythene film. Reference is also made to forming aluminium-paper-aluminium and paper-aluminium paper laminates. Reference is made to using propylene in place of ethylene and lithium, potassium or ammonium in place of sodium.</p> |
