[Also in Division H5] A thermoplastics spout 30 (Fig. 3) is welded by its flange 33 to a tube 10 of thermoplastics material while the upper surface of the tube is supported by a floating mandrel 14 disposed within it. The tube is subsequently welded and cut transversely to form bags. A cap may be screwed on the spout. In the form shown the mandrel 14 has barrel-shaped rollers 15 by which it is located on rollers 18, 19, of complementary shape, outside the tube 10. The mandrel may be further located by an upper roller 23. Alternatively the rollers may be replaced by an electromagnetic device for locating the mandrel 14 magnetically. The head 34 for welding the spout in place may have the section shown in Fig. 3 and may include an element 52 for producing a cruciform embossing or piercing in the part of the tube 10 surrounded by the spout. The welding head may be heated by elements 80. Alternatively an element mounted in the mandrel 14 may be heated dielectrically (see Division H5) by a field induced by electrodes mounted in the head 34. In still a further arrangement the member 52 passes through the plastics sheet and carries contacts for energizing heating elements mounted in the mandrel 14. Ultra-high-frequency sound may, as a further alternative, be used for fusing the plastics without generation of heat. |
