The hydrodisproportionation and/or hydrodealkylation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons is carried out by contacting said hydrocarbons under conversion conditions with hydrogen and; a catalyst consisting- of a crystalline aluminosilicate containing at least 0À5equivalents of metallic cations per gram of aluminium, at least 50% of which are cations of a rareearth metal.. The catalyst may be supported on a porous matrix. The hydrodisproportionation. conditionsspecified are 100-1000‹ F., 1-100atmospheres and a L.H.S.V. of 0À05- 40À0. The hydrodealkylation conditions specified are 1000-1300‹ F., 1-100 atmospheres, and a L.H.S.V. of 0À05-40À0.Hydrocarbons specified are. toluene; cyclohexylbenzene, diphenyl ethane, xylenes,. di- and trialkylbenzenes, alkyl naphthalenes, and alkyl anthracenes.
