PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character inputting method for inputting a secret character such as a password for preventing a third person from easily seeing through it even when a display screen is viewed by the third person. SOLUTION: At first, a "focus" is successively moved in a predetermined cycle along an input candidate character string to be displayed on the display screen of an output device 105, or a plurality of input candidate characters are successively displayed in the predetermined cycle. Then, a user clicks or depresses an input device 101 such as a mouse or remote control button in a period when his or her desired character is displayed, and selects and inputs it. The "focus" position is successively moved along the input candidate character string or the input candidate characters are successively displayed on the display screen, so that the character selected and inputted by the user can be prevented from being read from the display screen.
