PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a hydroxyphenyl ether in high yield by oxidizing the corresponding phenyl ether and preferentially producing the ortho-substituted form of the hydroxyphenyl ether. SOLUTION: The method for producing the hydroxyphenyl ether of formula (2) (wherein, R is a 1-5C alkyl) comprises oxidizing the corresponding phenyl ether of formula (1) (wherein, R is the same as defined above) with a peroxide in the presence of an acidic zeolite, a carboxylic acid and phosphoric acid.
