A portable device for non-intrusively removing a cork from a bottle, eg used to store wine. An air chamber (5) has means (3) for creating a seal between the air chamber and the rim of a bottle (2). A second air chamber (6) is separated from the first by a barrier fitted with a one-way air valve (7). A piston means (8) located within the second chamber and is attached to an actuation means (9). Actuation of the piston means by a lever (12c) draws air from the first chamber into the second chamber. The resulting lowering of the pressure within the first chamber draws the cork from the bottle into the first chamber. The cork is removed from the bottle, avoiding potential fouling of the cork, bottle or liquid therein. A pressure relief mechanism (15) equalizes the pressure in the first chamber allowing the device to be separated from the bottle.
