A fuel cell has electrodes bonded to opposite sides of a solid electrolyte body by sintering, each electrode comprising a spinel made by sintering a mixture of metallic oxides at least one of which is an oxide of a metal of variable valency. The metal of variable valency may be Co, Ni, Mn, Cr or Cu and the other oxides may be one or more oxides of Mg, Al, Be, Zn or V. The electrolyte may be ZrO 2 , MfO 2 , UO 2 or ThO 2 stabilized by CaO, MgO and/or Y 2 O 3 or may be a matrix of MgO impregnated with alkali metal carbonate. The fuel may be methane, ethane, propane, heavy oil, alcohol, hydrazine or hydrogen and the oxidant: air, oxygen or hydrogen peroxide. A propane/oxygen cell with an anode consisting of a spinel MnO 2 .ZnO. Cr 2 O 3 .FeO.CuO.MgO.Al 2 O 3 , an electrolyte of ZrO 2 stabilized with CaO and as a spinel cathode of MnO 2 .NiO.CoO.Al 2 O 3 .MgO. |
