PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the effect of white balance of a color image. SOLUTION: In a white balance correcting method, the image signal of each pixel of a color image is multiplied by predetermined coefficients, a group of gray candidate pixels corresponding to each of the coefficients is obtained using a pixel included near a black body locus curve of the gray as a gray candidate pixel, the coefficient at which the number of the pixels of the group of gray candidate pixels is the maximum is used as the optimum coefficient, the color temperature of the photographing light source of the color image is obtained from the color temperature of each pixel contained in the group of gray candidate pixels corresponding to the optimum coefficient, and the image signal of the color image which is multiplied by the optimum coefficient is corrected by the difference between the obtained color temperature and the color temperature of reference white. In this method, the sum obtained by weighted addition of the number of counts of each of the gray candidate pixels for the group of gray candidate images using a weighting coefficient shown in the figure is used as the number of pixels of the group of gray candidate pixels.
