摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator which is made small in size and light in weight, whose life is long and whose luminance is high, and to provide a projection type display device whose degree of freedom in design is high. SOLUTION: The illuminator has a plurality of light sources emitting light having different wavelength, a wavelength composing means emitting synthetic light by selectively reflecting or transmitting it in accordance with the wavelength of a plurality of light sources, and a reflection means having a polarized light separation means transmitting either polarized light out of the synthetic light and reflecting the other polarized light, and reflecting the polarized light reflected by the polarized light separation means and passing through the wavelength composing means toward the polarized light separation means again. The projection type display device is equipped with the illuminator and has a spatial optical modulation element modulating luminous flux emitted from the illuminator based on display information, a projection optical system projecting the luminous flux modulated by the spatial optical modulation element to a projection surface.
