PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reconcile an energy saving operation and an ensured cooling capacity by appropriately matching a throttle rate with each compressor speed in each cooling operation mode, in a refrigerator having a motor-operated expansion valve combined in series with a capillary tube. SOLUTION: The refrigerator comprises a refrigeration cycle having a decompression part connecting the capillary tube and the motor-operated expansion valve in series and a suction pipe in thermal contact with the capillary tube, a plurality of storage chambers of different temperature zones, switch dampers disposed in respective draft passages to the storage chambers, and a controller for controlling the travel of the motor-operated expansion valve and the opening of the switch dampers in dependence on a plurality of cooling operation modes. The controller has a function of setting a plurality of compressor speeds in every cooling operation mode, presetting default travels of the motor-operated expansion valve for the plurality of compressor speeds, and controlling the cooling operation modes correspondingly.
