The invention relates to a method of determining whether or not a product is in a condition for use or consumption, whereby said product is intended to be preserved in temperature conditions and for a period of time which limit the degradation thereof. According to the invention, an indicator is associated with the product and said indicator provides: (i) a signal indicating that the product can be used or consumed; and (ii), following the expiration of a preservation period, a signal indicating a change in the use or consumption condition of the product, said period depending on the product preservation conditions. In this way, the indicator provides information which enables the product to be used or consumed during a longer of time if the product has been preserved in conditions better than standard or recommended conditions or during a shorter period if the product has been preserved in conditions worse than standard or recommended conditions.
