The use of an isolated polymerase protein having an unspecified capability of RNA synthesis in vitro when contacted with nucleic acid substrates under conditions appropriate for in vitro synthesis, for producing RNA in vitro, the protein being encoded by a nucleic acid sequence selected from the group comprising: (a) a nucleic acid sequence having at least a partial nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:1; (b) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least a partial amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 8; (c) a nucleic acid sequence which differs from the nucleic acid sequence of (a) or (b) due to degeneracy of the genetic code; (d) a nucleic acid sequence hybridizing to the nucleic acid sequence of (a), (b) and/or (c); and (e) a nucleic acid sequence encoding an amino acid sequence which shows at least 20% identity, preferably at least 50% identity to a sequence contained in (b); wherein the protein preferably originates form Cystoviridae, Retroviridae, birnaviridae or Totiviridae viruses and more particularly where the protein originates from phi6-related bacteriophages from the family Cystoviridae.
