PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member of a compressor having high reliability with no possibility of seizure even in excessive operation under severe lubricating conditions while achieving a lighter weight and higher efficiency with high speed rotation. SOLUTION: The sliding member is formed of a soft material 19 consisting of a base material 17 and harder particles 18 dispersed thereinto. A vulnerable layer 20 consisting of columnar tissues is formed on the surface layer part of at least a sliding portion. The thickness of the vulnerable layer 20 is set to be not greater than the average particle size of the harder particles 18.
