PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus in which a sheet material is prevented from being left, and a sheet material carrying method. SOLUTION: This recording apparatus comprises: a first carrying means 11; a second carrying means 30 which is arranged on a downstream side with respect to the means 11, so as to carry the sheet material to the downstream side or an upstream side; a recording means which is arranged on the downstream side with respect to the means 30; a first carrying passage A which allows the passage of the sheet material carried to the downstream side by the carrying means 11; a second carrying passage B which allows the passage of the sheet material carried to the upstream side by the carrying means 30; a first detection means 35 for detecting a carrying state of the sheet material along the carrying passage A; a second detection means for detecting a carrying state of the sheet material along the carrying passage B; and a control means for controlling the carrying means 11 and 30 according to the result of detection by the first and second detection means. In the case of a lack of the carrying amount of the sheet material, a refeeding operation is performed.
