An umbrella which can be opened and closed by one hand comprises a notch 4 and a handgrip tube 9 riveted to opposite ends of a tubular stick section 5, and a runner member 1 riveted to a tubular stick section 2, which carries a handle 3 and a spring-urged pivoted catch lever 12. The tube 5 is telescoped into the tube 2 to open the umbrella, under gravity or by pressure of the handle 3 against the person after release of the nose 14 of the catch from the aperture 16 by a finger of the handle grasping the handgrip 9, the handgrip moving towards the handle and the rivet 8 sliding in slots 10, 11 in the stick section 2 until opening movement is terminated by the engagement of nose 14 in aperture 15. To close the umbrella, the umbrella is held so that when the catch is released the stick section 2 under its own weight and that of the ribs, stretchers and cover slides until the nose 14 engages the aperture 16. In a modification the runner member is press-fitted on the stick section 2, a ring is provided to space the ribs, when closed, away from the stick, the stick section 2 is thickened towards the handle end forming a shoulder up to which the runner member is pressed, and the slot 13 is replaced by openings in the handgrip tube which are reinforced by external rings and engage pawl-like noses of a spring-urged pivoted catch, no movement of the grasping hand relative to the hand grip tube 9, being necessary in opening or closing of the umbrella. |
