PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus in which efficiency in cooling an optical modulation element is improved while a sharp image display is maintained. SOLUTION: An image display unit 11 has in its housing 34: an optical engine 31 which has the optical modulation element capable of optically modulating light from a light source into projection light Lp for image display; and a blower 46 which sends a stream of air towards the optical modulation element. The unit 11 projects projection light Lp emitted from an optical engine 31 onto the back of a screen panel 32, thereby displaying an image.
