A nuclear fuel element comprises actinide oxide fuel contained in a zirconium or zirconium alloy can, and has a layer of metallic nitride between the fuel and the can. Rods or pellets of sintered UO 2 may be coated with titanium or niobium nitride which prevents migration of oxygen from the fuel into a zirconium-copper alloy can. Titanium and/or niobium oxide powder may be sprayed on to the sintered fuel and then heated at 1000-1500‹ C. in a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen to form the nitride. Alternatively compressed UO 2 may be coated with the oxide, sintering and formation of the nitride being carried out simultaneously by heating to 1300‹ to 1700‹ C. The nitride layer may also be formed by pyrolysis of a metal chloride in a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen. |
