<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain large emitted light quantity by efficiently cooling a light emitting body in an illuminator and a projection type display device. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator is equipped with a container 21 having closed space in which fluid X for cooling is enclosed, and the light emitting body 25 arranged adjacently to the container 21 and emits light/generates heat by the injection of a current, and is equipped with shape changing parts 22 and 24 changing the spatial shape of the closed space and a following part 22 following the change of the spatial shape of the closed space.
