摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystal material and to provide a liquid crystal composition comprising the liquid crystal material as a key component and having a wide temperature range and negative dielectric anisotropy of a large absolute value and further to provide a VA (vertical alignment) type liquid crystal display element having high reliability and using the same composition. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition is characterized as follows. The composition comprises a compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>a</SP>denotes a 2-7C linear alkyl group; p denotes 0 or 1; and R<SP>b</SP>denotes a 1-5C linear alkyl group) and a compound represented by general formula (5) (wherein, R<SP>m</SP>denotes a 1-7C linear alkyl group or a 1-7C linear alkenyl group; R<SP>n</SP>denotes a 1-12C linear alkyl group, a 1-12C linear alkenyl group, a 1-12C linear alkoxy group or a 1-12C linear alkenyloxy group; m6 denotes 0 or 1; M1 and Mm denote each independently a single bond, -COO- or -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-; and ring G denotes a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group or a 1,4-phenylene group) and has≤-3 dielectric anisotropy.
