In a method of treating web-like textile material with a gaseous medium which reacts chemically with the material or with compound present on material, the material is wound in open-width form on a perforated drum, the gaseous medium being introduced into the interior of the drum, and the drum rotated to force the gaseous medium radially through the material. The gaseous medium may comprise chlorine, sulphur dioxide, formaldehyde, or mixtures .thereof. The drum, preferably having a diameter of from 100-700 mm, may be surrounded by an envelope, the gaseous medium either being exhausted therefrom or returned to the interior of the drum. The method may be used in dye fixing, bleaching synthetic resin condensation and cellulose cross-linking. The material may advantageously be wound on the drum with intermediate layer of jute.
