1,149,344. Epoxides. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 29 March, 1966 [1 July, 1965], No. 13944/66. Addition to 1,136,923. Heading C2C. Epoxides are produced by reacting a C 2-4 olefin with a C 4-8 tertiary alkyl hydroperoxide under superatmospheric pressure at 50-200‹ C. in the presence of metallic Mo or a compound of Mo as catalyst and in the presence of a solvent which contains at least 20% by weight of a hydrocarbon which is benzene, an alkylated benzene of up to 18 carbon atoms or a C 4-16 paraffin, provided that said solvent is not solely benzene, toluene or 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. Specified hydrocarbon solvents are xylenes, cumene, ethyl-, t-butyl-, octyl- and dodecylbenzenes, isobutane, hexanes, iso-octanes, nonanes and decanes. t-Butyl alcohol may be used as a co-solvent. The preferred hydroperoxide is t-butyl hydroperoxide. Preferred catalysts are molybdenum carbonyls, halides and heteropoly acid salts. Examples relate to the preparation of propylene oxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,060,122 and 1,074,330.
|
