Ultrasonic welding assembly has a sonotrode (12), to compress and/or weld electrical leads and especially to form passage or end knots in the wires (10). One section of the sonotrode has a limit surface (18) to define one side of the compression zone (20) which takes the lead, and the other limit surface (22) is a counter electrode (14), together with a third limit surface (24) formed by a limit unit (16). The limit surfaces form a compression zone with an open triangular cross section. As the limit surfaces are moved, the edge (30) of the counter electrode moves along the first limit surface to maintain a constant gap during compression or welding. The first limit surface is at an angle to the horizontal, and the third limit surface is vertical with the counter electrode projecting from it in a sliding movement.
