PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser excellent in that an increase in temperature during operation is extremely small. SOLUTION: A semiconductor chip 1 has an active layer 5 and radiation is emitted in a main radiation direction 6. The active layer 5 is formed into a structure perpendicular to the main radiation direction 6, and thereby the heating of the semiconductor chip 1 due to spontaneous emission radiation 10 is reduced.
