PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus in which control of pushing force of a coating roll in order to modify passing speed of a plate and coating film thickness is not required and a wide range of film thickness can be controlled with high precision by a simple method. SOLUTION: In the coating method for coating a steel sheet 2 with a coating material 7 supplied to the coating roll 4 by using the coating apparatus 1 equipped with a roll coater provided with a doctor roll 6 and the coating roll 4 to be rotated in the same direction as a moving direction of the steel sheet 2, the steel sheet 2 is coated by controlling thickness of the coating film applied onto the steel sheet 2 by regulating a doctor roll circumferential speed ratio which is a ratio of circumferential speed of the doctor roll 6 to a moving speed of the steel sheet 2.
