PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the disadvantages of existing dampers. SOLUTION: This invention is related to a device for damping the vibrations of cables used in structures. The cable has a bundle of metal strands (5) with their end fixed to a structure and enclosed by a tube (4) connected with the structure at least at a section adjacent to that strand bundle end fixed to the structure, a collar (3) placed around the strand bundle, and vibration absorption means provided substantially between the collar and the tube. The absorption means is provided with at least two units of piston type dampers (1) each having a substantially straight stroke and arranged around the cable substantially radially or at an angle with it.
