PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hinder the occurrence of nonuniform brightness of a projection image in the case where a projection optical system is shifted relative to a lighting optical system. SOLUTION: The projection type display optical system comprises: a lighting optical system 700 which includes first and second integrators 201 and 202 having a plurality of lens parts 201a and 202a, respectively, arranged in predetermined directions and which splits a luminous flux from a light source 100 into a plurality of luminous fluxes and emits the thus obtained luminous fluxes so that they are superimposed on an image forming element 400; and a projection optical system 500 which projects the luminous fluxes from the image forming element onto a projection screen. The optical axis PL of the projection optical system is shifted in a predetermined direction relative to the optical axis IL of the lighting optical system and the center of the image forming element. Light rays emitted from at least two points of each lens part of the first integrator and passed through the center of the lens part of the second integrator corresponding to the lens part of the first integrator are made nonparallel and enter the image forming element.
