BAR CODE READING METHOD AND DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bar code reading device 21 which is capable of sufficiently coping with variation of the distance and the height between a bar code reader 22 and a bar code 13 to allow the read rate of the bar code 13 to be surely improved.

SOLUTION: The bar code reader 22 is moved in a longitudinal direction Y of coming close to and going away from the surface of the bar code 13, with a prescribed period and is moved in a vertical direction Z along the surface of the bar code 13 with a prescribed period. The movement period in the longitudinal direction Y and that in the vertical direction Z of the bar code reader are set by a gear ratio of a gear 48 for longitudinal-direction movement and a gear 49 for vertical-direction movement of a driving mechanism 27. The movement period in the vertical direction Z of the bar code reader 22 is made shorter than the movement period in the longitudinal direction Y. The bar code reader 22 is moved with both movement periods in the longitudinal direction Y and the vertical direction Z to read the bar code 13. The read rate of the bar code 13 is improved in accordance with variation of the distance and the height between the bar code reader 22 and the bar code 13.
