PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a commutation type circuit breaker capable of interrupting a small current flowing in a main circuit in a short time, capable of appropriately improving current breaking performance. SOLUTION: The commutation type circuit breaker, equipped with a main vacuum switch 1 inserted into the main circuit connecting a power source and a load, and a commutation circuit 5 electrically connected in parallel with the main vacuum switch 1 and composed of a capacitor 2, reactor 3 and a commutation switch 4 electrically connected in series, is provided with an operating control device 9 interlocking the main vacuum switch 1 with the commutation switch 4 at a given operating timing at an open-circuit time of the main circuit, and the operating timing of the main vacuum switch 1 with the commutation switch by the operating control device 9 is changed in accordance with current values of the main circuit.
