PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotation detector for detecting a specified rotation position, and to provide a medium carrying device equipped with the rotation detector, and a recording device. SOLUTION: The rotation detector 200 comprises a rotor 210, where a plurality of regions 211 are formed with a gap 212 on the circumference; and output sections 220, 230 for outputting two signals having a phase difference to the rotational travel of the region and the gap. The rotation detector 200 is formed so that the resolution of the region 211A or the gap 212A for outputting either signal increases, enabling to detect a specified rotational position, based on the detection signal at a high-resolution section.
