PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology capable of automatically selecting a proper image communication system among various image communication systems available with an opposite terminal without the need for troublesome operating procedures and setup procedures. SOLUTION: In the case of carrying out image communication by using one of a plurality of different image communication systems via a transmission / reception path including an IP network 101, a transmitter (105) and receivers (108, 108a, 112, 115) or apparatuses (gateways 111, 113 or an IP network interface 109 or the like) present in the transmission / reception path and for relaying image communication store an SDP media stream description for describing different usable image communication systems to an SIP message and transmit the resulting message, and an image communication system used for actual image communication and image communication control parameters to be used for the image communication system are selected with prescribed priority on the basis of the SDP media stream description.
