The method involves compressing the air in coplanar manner in order to shorten both the time of collision energy damping and filling of the airbag. When reaching a compression level, a fuel is sprayed into the air reservoir and self-ignites. The fuel is sprayed at an area, in order to discharge the air compression by explosion. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the method.
