DEVICE AND METHOD FOR ENLARGING MODE FIELD DIAMETER OF OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for enlarging a mode field in order to avoid partial heating congestion and prevent an optical fiber from decreasing in an external diameter. SOLUTION: A coating-removed part 12a is heated by reciprocally scanning microburners 18a and 18b in a direction parallel to an optical fiber 12 while holding the microburners at symmetrical positions about the optical fiber 12. Flames of the microburners 18a and 18b are temporarily put away from the optical fiber 12 at a return part 21 of reciprocal scanning. The position where the microburners are put away is about 1.0 mm inside the return part 21, and the distance by which they moves at right angles to the optical fiber 12 is about 5.0 mm. This operation is carried out by scanning Y stages 15a and 15b away from the optical fiber 12 at the position which is about 1.0 mm inside the return part 21 while scanning X stages 14a and 14b in parallel to the direction of the fixation axis of the optical fiber.
