<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly perform block distortion reduction for reproduced image data obtained by decoding image date coded by a block unit coding without causing an erroneous operation and without having adverse effect on the reproduced image, even if there is a contour portion in a block boundary and its neighborhood. <P>SOLUTION: For the reproduced image data obtained by decoding image date coded by a block unit coding, a block distortion detector 13 detects the presence and strength of a block distortion by using a pixel change value in the vicinity of the block boundary. Based on block distortion presence/absence detecting information and detected block distortion strength information, a noise reducer 14 designates a filter processing target pixel range, and performs noise reduction by selecting and applying any one from among a plurality of edge saving type smoothing filters. In this way, even if there is a contour in the block boundary and its neighborhood, the block distortion can be reduced without causing adverse effect. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
