PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of identifying each of a plurality of sync signals detected by the same sensor surely. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 comprises a plurality of optical writing means 162, and a means 174 for detecting each of the lights being irradiated from the plurality of optical writing means 162 as a sync signal periodically wherein a plurality of sync signals are detected periodically by the same detecting means 174. The image forming apparatus 10 generates a false signal at such a timing as the sync signal is not detected theoretically (e.g. a timing at which a photosensitive drum 140 is irradiated with a laser beam by the optical writing means 162), and identifies the type of the sync signal based on the false signal thus generated.
