PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic dihydroxy compound usable as a raw material for a polycarbonate for an optical polymer, to provide a method for evaluating quality and to provide a method for producing a high-quality polymer using the same. SOLUTION: The method for producing the aromatic dihydroxy compound is carried out as follows. In the method, operation selected from the group consisting of (a), (b) and (c) is performed to determine the content of a basic component or an acidic component in a sample from the residual ratio of the resultant aromatic dihydroxy compound. An acidic compound or a basic compound in an amount to neutralize the component is added to any of a production process. (a) The sample is mixed with a carbonic acid diester and heated and the residual ratio of the aromatic dihydroxy compound is then measured. (b) The sample is mixed with the carbonic acid diester and the acidic compound and heated and the residual ratio of the aromatic dihydroxy compound is then measured.
