Use of an apoptosis-inducing and/or -stimulating substance (AIS) that interacts with mitochondrial potassium channels (MK) to prepare a composition for preventing and/or treating diseases associated with reduced apoptosis. Use of at least one apoptosis-inducing and/or -stimulating substance (AIS) to prepare a composition for prevention and/or treatment of human or animal diseases which involve (or are associated with) excessive reduction in apoptosis and/or, particularly, excessive cell growth and/or division, or in which targeted apoptosis of particular cells is sought. The new feature is that AIS acts by interaction with mitochondrial potassium channels (MK) of the cells concerned. An independent claim is also included for a method for discovery or identification of AIS. ACTIVITY : Parasiticide; Antibacterial; Virucide; Anti-HIV; Hepatotropic; Cytostatic; Apoptotic.
