An apparatus and method for providing information on a subscriber position of a PBX(Private Branched eXchange) are provided to detect a current position of an extension subscriber who has moved to a different section and transfer a received call to the user. An infrared signal transmitter(10) is held by a subscriber and carried along with the subscriber and continuously transmits an infrared signal which has been fixedly allocated to the subscriber. An infrared signal receiver(21) detects the infrared signal transmitted from the infrared signal transmitter(10) for a certain time, analyzes the infrared signal to detect subscriber information, and transmits detected subscriber information and its position information to a PBX(30). The PBX(30) updates a database based on the subscriber information and the position information received from the infrared signal receiver(21), searches current position information of the subscriber from the database when a call is destined to a usage phone number designated for the corresponding subscriber, and transfers the call to the subscriber.
