A method and an apparatus for transmitting image data in a host device having a copy protection function are provided to prevent a use error although a display device does not support HDCP(High-bandwidth Digital Contents Protection) by disabling the HDCP when the display device does not support the HDCP and displaying a warning message on an OSD(On Screen Display). A memory(10-5) stores information necessary for a certain copy protection process. An OSD processing unit(10-6) generates certain warning message graphic data to be displayed on an OSD according to an OSD control signal. A DVD(Digital Versatile Disk) reproducing device(10-1) synthesizes OSD graphic data according to the OSD control signal, and outputs the synthesized OSD graphic data. A DVI(Digital Visual Interface) transmission unit(10-2) has a certain copy protection device. If the copy protection device is enabled, the DVI transmission unit scrambles the data outputted from the DVD reproducing device using information stored in the memory and outputs the scrambled data according to a DVI standard. An interface unit(10-3) performs a data transmission/reception interface with a display device(20). A control unit(10-4) judges whether copy protection information is stored in a recording medium. If copy protection information is stored, the control unit enables the copy protection device and executes a data communication process for copy protection authentication with the display device connected to a host device through the interface unit. If the authentication fails, the control unit disables the copy protection device and generates the OSD control signal to output the warning message graphic data. |
