A projection image display device using the second light source and an operation method therefor are provided to reduce a time required until the first light source is stabilized and the display of the first light source is started by adding the second light source. An optical engine(410) has the first light source(10), the second light source(20), and a light blocking film(30). The second light source includes a halogen lamp. The light blocking film blocks light emitted from the first and second light sources. A controller(440) has a light source detector(442), a light blocking film adjustor(444), and a power controller(446). The light source detector has a sensor(441) for confirming the stability of the first light source. The light blocking film adjustor controls the light blocking film to block the light emitted from the first light source until the first light source is stabilized. If the first light source is stabilized, the light blocking film adjustor controls the light blocking film to block the light emitted from the second light source. If the first light source is stabilized, the power controller blocks the power supply of the second light source.
