An electric leak checking device and a checking method are provided to retrieve an exact electric leak place and an exact position of an inferior lighting apparatus by using a safety voltage, thereby exactly perceiving the electric leak place while accurately sensing distributions of an electric leak generated from a main line section or the inferior lighting apparatus. While lighting apparatuses(300) are put out, power is supplied to a main line. Based on a signal of the first detector(251), the first electric leak sensitivity setup unit(250) stores data on electric leaks in each terminal(200). A power supply is connected to the lighting apparatuses(300) at certain intervals up to the nearest terminal from the farthest terminal in a terminal. On the basis of a signal of the first detector(251), the first electric leak sensitivity setup unit(250) stores data on electric leaks in each terminal(200). The controller receives the first data and the second data on the electric leaks stored in each terminal(200). The controller retrieves the first data in order of the farthest number of each terminal(200), and repeatedly retrieves the second data, to retrieve a position where the first electric leak generation signal is discovered.
