An apparatus and a method for controlling a speaker volume by using a touch sensor are provided to determine whether a mobile terminal is in contact with the face of a user and suitably control a speaker volume with respect to various alarms and effect sounds. A touch sensor(100) senses contact of the skin of a user to a mobile terminal. A CPU(101) controls a volume of a dual-mode speaker(104) according to the contact detected through the touch sensor(100). A midi(102) converts digital music data received from the CPU(101) according to generation of a midi event into analog information. An analog switch(103) transfers a signal outputted from a receiver or from the midi(102) to the dual-mode speaker(104) under the control of the CPU(101). The dual-mode speaker(104) outputs the receiver/midi signal which has been selected through the analog switch(103).
