An apparatus and method for automatically setting a data size of a message are provided to allow a user to use corresponding bytes of a message according to a maximum message data size of an SMS of an SID(Service IDentification) received in roaming regardless of a maximum data size of an SMS set in his/her own mobile terminal. A microprocessor(210) controls an operation for automatically setting a data size of a general message of a mobile terminal and also controls to automatically set a maximum data size of an SMS of a mobile communication service provider corresponding to an SID received from a base station through an RF transmitter/receiver(250). A database(260) stores an SID of each mobile communication service provider and a maximum data size of an SMS according to the SID as data. A message size processing unit(280) automatically processes the maximum data size of each mobile communication service provider stored in the database(260) so as for a user to suitably use it.
