Novel 2 - oxo - 4 - (indol - 3 - yl) - hexahydro- 1H-azepines of the general formula wherein R, R 3 and R 4 are each a hydrogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl group and R 2 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy group, are prepared by heating a 2-oxo-4-(indol-3-yl)- hexahydro - 1H . azepine - 3 - carboxylic acid of the general formula wherein R 1 is a hydrogen atom. Pharmaceutical compositions having anticonvulsant and strychnine-antagonistic activity comprise, as active ingredient, a 2-oxo-4-(indol- 3-yl)-hexahydro-lH-azepine of the first general formula above, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
