A process for the production of formylcyclopropane- carboxylic esters represented by the general formula (2): (2) [wherein R1 is linear, branched or cyclic alkyl, optionally substituted aryl, or optionally substituted aralkyl; and R 2 is hydrogen or methyl], characterized by reacting a cyclopropanecarboxylic ester represented by the general formula (1): (1) [wherein R1and R2 are each as defined above] with at least one oxidizing agent selected from the group consisting of hypohalites, N-halosuccinimides, trichloroiso- cyanuric acid and iodine in the presence of a nitroxy radical compound.
