PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copying apparatus using an ADF which reduces costs of a motor for driving a carriage, prevents noise and enhances reliability by reading an image, even when returning the carriage, and eliminating the need to return the carriage at a high speed. SOLUTION: The digital copying apparatus that uses an auto document feeder 1 to perform copying includes a control means, comprising functions with which a carriage 32 forward scans odd-numbered documents when continuously reading documents by the auto document feeder 1, the carriage 32 backward scans even-numbered documents, and images of image data for the even-numbered documents are formed in reverse to the data read.
