PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine adapted to change a compression ratio by driving a control shaft to rotate, restraining abrasion of a sliding part in a control shaft or a contact part by properly supplying lubricating oil to the control shaft and the contact part, and reducing the load to the internal combustion engine due to the supply of lubricating oil. SOLUTION: In this variable compression ratio internal combustion engine, a the control shaft supported by a bearing part and connected to an engine element of the internal combustion engine is driven to change the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine. The engine includes: a lubricating oil supply means for supplying lubricating oil to the control shaft or the bearing part; and a lubricating oil supply control means for increasing the quantity of lubricating oil supplied to the control shaft or the bearing part by the lubricating oil supply means more than the quantity of lubricating oil supplied at the time of stopping the control shaft during a predetermined period of time immediately before the start of changing the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine or at the start of changing it.
