<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can carry out language interpretation by a plurality of interpretation modes, and avoids a useless process at the time of processing printing data although a language interpretation module which requires freeing or the like of a memory at the time of changing the interpretation mode is used. <P>SOLUTION: A language A interpretation module which requires freeing or the like of the memory at the time of changing the interpretation mode is made to be in a state in which interpretation by a page mode (interpretation mode) indicated by a page mode setting value becomes possible, with reference to the page mode setting value stored in a basic setting value storage area when the module is started. At the same time, printing data which requires starting of the language A interpretation module is made to include the page mode setting value in its header part.
