PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a wire break without trouble, in an electric power steering device equipped with a motor drive prohibiting circuit. SOLUTION: The electric power steering device comprises a steering torque sensor for detecting steering torque, a motor M for assisting steering, a motor current detecting circuit 49 for detecting a motor current, an electronic control unit U for controlling driving of the motor M on the basis of the steering torque and detecting the wire break in power supplying lines 53, 54 or that in the motor M on the basis of the motor current, and the motor drive prohibiting circuit 52 for prohibiting driving of the motor M in an opposite direction to the steering torque direction. When the motor drive prohibiting circuit 52 prohibits driving of the motor M, the electronic control unit U prohibits the detection of the wire break, thereby preventing a state that the motor drive prohibiting circuit 52 prohibits driving of the motor M from being wrongly determined as a state that the wire break occurs.
