The present invention is directed to a polypeptide that binds to the androgen receptor, the polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence Ar-X-X-Z-Ar, or Ser-beta-Ar- X-Delta-Psi-Ar; or Ser-beta-Ar-Delta-X-Psi-Ar; or Ser-X-Ar-X-X-Psi-Ar; wherein Ar is an aromatic amino acid; X is any amino acid; and Z is a hydrophobic amino acid (Psi) or an aromatic amino acid (Ar), beta is a basic amino acid; and A is an acidic amino acid. The present invention is also directed to methods of analyzing the surface conformation of a protein using one or more of the above polypeptide sequences; methods of identifying modulators of protein function using one or more of the above polypeptide sequences; and pharmaceutical compositions comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and one or more of the above polypeptide sequences.
